PROJECT: HMSS
HMSS is an ensemble for improvised electronic music that usually plays with multichannel speaker-systems. the ensemble exists since 2005 and its members are Ludger Hennig (live-electronic), markowski (git/live-electronic), sciss aka Hanns-Holger Rutz (live-electronic) and Johannes Sienknecht (live-electronic).
in concerts the ensemble is usually placed in the middle of the concert room, because HMSS sets up 4 speakers or more (up to 25 speakers @ 5+1 Berlin, Wasserspeicher) around the audience and the musicians to be able to control the positions and movements of the sounds in the room.
each musician of HMSS uses his own-built application on computer, but all members are connected via audio-network, so that everyone can get sound or data of anyone else to manipulate parameters of his application.
another part of HMSS-music developed in 2008, by taking soundfiles of the city where the concert is, and use these soundfiles as audio-material for the concert or especially soundinstallations. so did we record lots of people, trains, unique sounds of Riga (LV) for a concert at RIXC in may 2008, with a following soundinstallation using the sounds of Riga aswell as the sounds of the concert itself. the same concept was used in Jena (FRG) for DIE UNTERWELT DER WISSENSCHAFT. sciss made a nice info-site on this → http://sciss.de/texts/ins_unterwelt.html
on another event at RIXC, Riga (LV) in august 2008, HMSS used sounds of the radiotelescope-station RT-32 in Irbene (LV). during the allnight concert the RT-32 was turned on several planets and stars. the so received data was streamed live from the radiotelescope-station onto the computers of the ensemble.
